Solutions to bird refuge issues in Santa Barbara will be studied

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - Hoping to find a way to reduce an occasional smell and other issues at the Andree Clark Bird Refuge, the Santa Barbara City Council hears a proposal Tuesday that could clear up some ongoing concerns.

The council will vote on spending about $98,000 for a company that specializes in restoration and ecological consulting.

The site is one of the more scenic water spots in the city.

It attracts local and migrating birds and has some species that require sensitive care, including the Tidewater Goby.

The problems with the bird refuge usually come about when the water level is low and temperatures are hot.

That often creates an algae growth and a rotten egg smell for miles.

Generally it is in the late summer months or early fall.

The city council takes up the matter in a presentation from the Parks and Recreation Department.
