Tenants search for place to live while facing eviction in Isla Vista

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - Arman Sanchez-Mohit and Eliott Lewis live at the CBC and sweeps in Isla Vista.

But not for long.

"Living here since December 1 … I moved here from San Diego came here … come here because I was in a band that played here pretty frequently and it was just much more convenient for me to live here," said Sanchez-Mohit.

Sanchez-Mohit went through great lengths finding this apartment only to discover he would soon have to move.

Since the eviction notice went out on March 16, tenants have been on the hunt looking for another place to place to live.

The notice stated that a substantial remodel is planned.

And everyone has 60 days to leave following a change of property ownership to Core Spaces.

"Within months all the sudden I get a notification … and I already went through a lot of stress trying to find housing before and then all the sudden it gets in hit me that I might not have a place to live," said Sanchez-Mohit.

Sanchez-Mohit and Lewis said they now have less than 24 hours to vacate their units by Saturday, June 17.

"I was quit shook … I think it caught us all off guard … got into a bit of shock … I think I just panicked …  panic mode … because obviously there’s already a housing crisis as it is here in Isla Vista so that and then there’s on top of it … it was like  â€¦ what are we gonna do … we had to find something quick," said Lewis.

Lewis and Sanchez-Mohit said while they were able to find housing, others are still looking.

"We have a housemate here, who will literally be homeless … living in his car as a result of this eviction," said Sanchez-Mohit.

The Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is monitoring the situation at CBC and the Sweeps.

"We have been involved with the CBC situation and it’s a really stressful time for families and residents there," said executive director Jennifer Smith of the Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County.

Smith of the nonprofit organization said in addition to students, there are longtime residents living at the apartment complex.

"The Really hard thing right now for so many families is that there are simply no places to go … so even for so many of these people … even if they’re going out and trying to find housing … they can’t find anything … or if they do apply they can’t compete … Core Spaces has said that they want to work with tenants and I hope that’s true," said Smith.

"When I move … I gotta look into like getting Cal fresh and all that stuff," said Sanchez-Mohit.

NewsChannel 3 reached out to Core Spaces. They did not immediately respond.
