Officials release cause of McMillan Fire

Officials from Cal Fire have released information about what sparked the McMillan Fire near Shandon last week.

Details are limited, but Cal Fire Public Information Officer Clint Bullard said the cause of the fire was accidental and appeared to start as a result of a “vehicular machine.”

The McMillan Fire burned 1,700 acres over a two-day period. The fire was initially reported as a small spot fire but quickly exploded to hundreds of acres as it scorched grass and agricultural land.

Cal Fire says almost all wildfires in San Luis Obispo County are caused by humans and the majority of those are caused by faulty or negligent use of vehicles or equipment.

Almost all wildfires in SLO County are human-caused. Leading causes are faulty vehicles/equipment and/or improper/negligent use of vehicles/equipment. PLEASE AVOID THESE ACTIVITIES! In just the first few weeks of spring, DOZENS of fires have consumed THOUSANDS of acres! pic.twitter.com/DA5xlNOhqQ
