Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office invites students to register parties in Isla Vista

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is rolling out a new Party Registration Program in Isla Vista.

The voluntary program that is now up and running is designed to provide an open line of communication between authorities and Isla Vista residents and party hosts.

They hope the plan will reduce problems between law enforcement and residents.

The way it works is pretty simple: the party host pre-registers the party with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol and designates a sober party monitor.

If officers receives a complaint, they will text the sober monitor and give them 20 minutes to shut the party down. This gives the party host the power to be a good neighbor and reduces the likelihood of a being fined.

A similar program is already in place in the City of San Luis Obispo near the Cal Poly campus.

“This program embraces the idea of community-oriented policing and partners community members with law enforcement to solve the problem of noise complaints in Isla Vista. It also creates an open line of communication between the community and law enforcement, shows transparency and cooperation, and encourages future partnerships to solve other crimes,” said Lieutenant Juan Camarena of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol.

The program is part of community policing.

“The idea is to partner with Isla Vista residents to make it a safer and happier place for all to live, study and work. Get a text, not a ticket. Register your party every time,” said Isla Vista Community Resource Deputy Justin Schroeder.

To participate in the party registration program visit the foot patrol website, then fill out the party registration form and hit submit.
