Police arrest 19-year-old in connection with shooting death of Oxnard man

Homicide investigators with the Oxnard Police Department have arrested 19-year-old Oxnard resident Osvaldo Hernandez in connection with several robberies and the shooting death of 39-year-old Robert de la Cerda on June 2018.

Hernandez was identified as the homicide suspect by investigators after collecting evidence and interviewing several people who provided investigators with valuable information.

On June 27, 2018, police officers responded to the 4000 block of South J Street to check the well-being of a man who was bleeding and discovered the victim had been shot multiple times. De la Cerda was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additionally, the Oxnard Police Department’s Special Operations Division identified Hernandez as a suspect for three robberies and attempted robberies that occurred between 4 a.m. and 5:48 a.m. just before De La Cerda was killed, authorities say.

Major Crimes investigators arrested Hernandez at the Ventura County Jail where he was already in police custody, and charged him with murder, two additional counts of robbery, and one count of attempted robbery.

Hernandez will remain in police custody and is not eligible for bail.

The investigation into the June 27 homicide is ongoing. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crime is asked to call Detective Robert Valenzuela at 805-385-7645.
