Memorial service and fundraising information for fallen firefighter

On Saturday, December 23rd at 10:00 a.m., a memorial Service for fallen CAL FIRE engineer Cory Iverson will take place inside the Rock Church, located at 2277 Rosecrans St., San Diego, CA 92106.

The firefighter that lost his life battling the Thomas Fire has been identified as 32-year-old Cory Iverson of Escondido.

Iverson died from “thermal injuries and smoke inhalation,” according to a news release from the Ventura County Medical Examiner Office. An autopsy was performed on Dec. 15.

Iverson is survived by his wife, Ashley, who is pregnant, and their 2-year-old daughter.

Sadly, one firefighter was killed in the line of duty fighting the Thomas Fire. The news was confirmed by Unified Command early Thursday afternoon.

“The incident is still unfolding, but in this world of fast moving information, it is important to me that only factual information be shared. To that end, I can confirm a fatality of a CAL FIRE Engineer from the San Diego Unit has occurred. IMT 4, CAL FIRE Local 2881 and Southern Region leadership are working to support the Unit and his family, who have been notified,” stated a news release by Unified Command.

The firefighter’s family has been notified. He has not been identified.

It is believed the incident occurred on the eastern flank of the Thoms Fire near Fillmore in Ventura County. Flags will be flown at half-staff.

No further details were immediately known. We will update this story when new information becomes available.
