North Vandenberg AFB fire fully contained at four acres

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.

Firefighters responded to another brush fire on the north end of Vandenberg Air Force base today. The fire broke out just before noon Monday.

The fire broke out a couple miles from the North Base Entrance off of Corral Road and Firefighter Road.

Vandenberg public affairs said the fire burned four acres and is 100% contained Monday afternoon. No buildings, base housing or schools were threatened by this fire.

Crestview Elementary school did evacuate as a precaution.

Vandenberg officials said this is a small fire, however a full brush fire response was ordered from Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Officials said the forward progress of the fire has stopped and the fire is completely out.

Power lines are reported to be down in the area.

According to emergency scanner traffic water dropping helicopters were on scene helping to put out the fire.

Onlookers who stopped to watch the fire today were tipping their hats to these firefighters.

“Sometimes they get to lean back and play cards, you know – and sometimes they have to spend 24/7 out on the line, that’s just the way it is for firemen,” Lompoc resident Robert Wolfe said.

The official cause of the fire is unknown.
