Parents of Isla Vista Murder Victims Speak Out in Sacramento on Gun Violence Bill

Parents of the Isla Vista mass murder victims are speaking out in Sacramento as a gun violence bill heads to Governor Jerry Brown.

A press conference took place this morning with a large group of legislators and family members standing shoulder to shoulder.

Assemblymember Das Williams and State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, both from Santa Barbara have urged lawmakers to move quickly to support the bill, AB 1014.

If passed it would allow law enforcement officers or immediate family members to request a court order prohibiting a person who poses a danger to others from possessing a gun.

Among those to speak at the event, was Richard Martinez, the father of slain student Christopher Michaels-Martinez. After his son’s death, Martinez made an emotional, tearful plea about the tragedy saying, “Not One More!”

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein recently said, “The consequences are tragic if we ignore those individuals who pose a risk of committing harm.”

On May 23, 2014 22-year old Elliot Rodger stabbed three people to death (including two roommates) then fatally shot three others, and wounded 13 others in a killing spree throughout the college town before taking his own life, according to Sheriff Bill Brown.

Prior to the rampage family members were alerted that killings were likely going to occur, but were unable to prevent it. A video and a written document were released by Rodger prior to the violence that were a chilling indication of what was about to happen.

The moving gun battle between Rodgers and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies put hundreds of people in the line of fire.
