Woman Speaks About Wave Crashing Into Restaurant

Video of a giant wave crashing into a Stearns Wharf restaurant has gone viral.

Waves were crashing onto the outside of the Moby Dick restaurant all morning, but a rogue wave with a lot of power made it through the glass. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt after it happened.

A Santa Barbara mother and her son captured the moment that soaked diners eating breakfast.

“I just heard this big boom and I heard all this glass shake so I thought somebody threw a cup or something like that,” said Jesse Freeland. “And then I realized there’s this huge wave coming into this window.”

On the cell phone video posted on YouTube, a woman’s voice can be heard.

“Time to go!”

That calm voice was Jesse Freeland’s mom Jill.

“Okay yeah. That was good let’s go!” she said with a laugh recalling the wave.

The Freeland family had just finished up breakfast at the restaurant but the mother and son continued to watch the waves from their table.

“When the wave came through I popped up and got my coat and I was just ready to run out,” said Jesse.

Another diner, Forrest Buchanan, also had his cell phone ready to go. He posted his video on YouTube as well.

In Buchanan’s video, you can see people get drenched and water flood the floor.

A day after, the broken window is boarded up and the carpet is drying.

Jill said although the video is compelling, it wasn’t as bad as it looks.

“To me it was kind of exciting and I’m glad no one was hurt or it wouldn’t be fun at all but it was exciting,” she said.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Jill’s YouTube video had more than 92,000 hits.
