Homes Evacuated by Atascadero Brush Fire

More than 200 firefighters were attacking a blaze now called the “Toro Creek Fire” in brush lands between Atascadero and Morro Bay Friday afternoon. The fire forced the evacuation of 12 homes near the flames as a precaution.

Personnel fighting the blaze include the U.S. Forest Service, Atascadero City Fire, San Luis Obispo City Fire, Templeton Fire, Morro Bay Fire and the Cayucos Fire Department.

The Toro Creek Fire is in brush laden hills west of Atascadero. Firefighting efforts are taking place both on the ground and from the air. More than 60 acres were burned with 25% containment as of Friday mid-afternoon.

Toro Creek Road is closed near the fire off Highway 41. Traffic on Hwy 41 will be sharing the road with emergency crews working the blaze.

Emergency crews set up an informational hotline at 543-2444.

Resources assigned to the fire include fifteen fire engines, four air tankers, three bulldozers, five hand crews, two helicopters, and other support personnel.
