Pride Festival kicks off in San Luis Obispo

The San Luis Obispo Pride Festival kicks off Friday night at SLO Brew. This is the 17th year the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of SLO County has held the event.

“Pride weekend is about celebrating who we are and our lives on the central coast and demonstrating our normalcy and our numbers and educating or advocating with the community,” said event organizer Robert Kinports.

The festivities begin with the drag show at SLO Brew. “We sold out tonight’s drag show yesterday. It’s the first time ever we sold 30 percent more tickets prior to the day of the show then we ever did up to the day of the show,” said Kinports.

This year is also extra special, considering the recent ruling by the Supreme Court. “I think there is going to be a celebratory atmosphere to it. I think we will have more people than we normally do down there so it’s going to be fantastic,” said Kinports.

The event wraps up on Sunday with a festival in Mission Plaza.
