Bicyclist killed in late night crash on Santa Barbara Mesa

A 44-year-old Santa Barbara man was killed early Tuesday morning while riding his bike on Cliff Dr. on the Santa Barbara Mesa.

Police say Joshua Canning was hit by a car just after midnight at the intersection of Cliff Drive and Flora Vista. Canning was riding in the No. 1 lane, wearing dark clothing and didn’t have a light on his bike. Authorities believe those factors contributed to the fatal accident.

The 61-year-old driver stayed at the scene and police say he was sober at the time of the accident.

Neighbors on the Mesa say this area is no stranger to accidents. In April 2012, a motorcyclist was hit by a car while making a turn. Residents say the speed of drivers is also a problem.

Police are still investigating Tuesday’s accident but say the Canning appears to be at fault.
