Sky lanterns banned in SLO County

Sky lanterns are now prohibited in San Luis Obispo County.

The County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance that prohibits lighting and launching of the lanterns.

This ordinance goes into effect in 30 days and covers county areas outside incorporated cities as well as fire districts.

A sky lantern caused a fire in Shell Beach on the mountain above Pirates Cove last summer.

Cal Fire San Luis Obispo said the fire burned several acres, and nearly destroyed emergency communication facilities and phone towers.

A misdemeanor ticket will be issued if someone violates the ordinance.

Cal Fire also said the violator will be liable for fire-suppression costs.
