Sequestration leads to event cancellations at Navy base
Across-the-board cuts, known as Sequestration, have led to the cancellation of the annual surf contest and Pt. Mugu and that’s not all.
The cost cutting measures at Naval Base Ventura County are affecting about a dozen events that allow the public to participate on the base at Pt. Mugu and Port Hueneme.
In addition to the surf contest, this year’s Admirals Cup triathlon and Wounded Warrier half-marathon have been called off.
For now, the air show, featuring the Blue Angels, is slated to fly high in late September.
Marketing Director Dan Alpern said it kills them to have to cancel so many events that boost the moral of the troops and their families.
Alpern said the base is not allowed to charge spectators and therefore spends a good deal of money on security during popular events.
Less expensive events such as the Military Spouse Appreciation Day will go on May 9. On that day spouses will be pampered in return for all they do to support the troops.
