Mahle, Kuresa lead UCSB to baseball win over 17th ranked Notre Dame
Sophomore Greg Mahle pitched four innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out six batters and UCSB used a four-run fourth inning to beat No. 17 Notre Dame 7-2. It’s the Gauchos first win over a ranked opponent since May of last year.
Mahle was on a strict pitch count after appearing in two games over the weekend. All six of his strikeouts were swinging and the lone baserunner that he allowed was a third inning infield single but Mahle quickly picked him off.
Leading 1-0 in the fourth inning, Santa Barbara got an RBI double from Parker Miles, a two-run triple from Tyler Kuresa and a run-scoring single from Robby Nesovic to make the score 5-0 after four innings.
The Gauchos bullpen gave up just two runs in five innings of work as Santa Barbara improves to 9-7 on the season. They host Sacramento State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
