Cougars almost knock of No. 1 Bishop Amat

After being behind 10-0 right out of the gate, not many would have thought that Vetura would have a chance at the end of the game to beat top-seeded Bishop Amat. But with under ten seconds left in their CIF Division 1A semifinal game, Ventura had the ball down 50-48. However the Cougars rally came up short as they turned the ball over and lost a heartbreaker 51-48.

Junior Kai Irby scored a game-high 28 points and she hit big baskets down the stretch to keep Ventura in striking distance. Down seven with under three minutes to go, Irby drove to the hole and hit a short jumper to cut Bishop Amat’s lead to 45-40.

With under 35 seconds left, Irby’s three-point play pulled the Cougars within one point at 49-48 but that’s as close as the Cougars would come to beating Bishop Amat. Despite the loss Ventura will continue their season next week in the State Tournament.
