Possible Pet Poisoning In Santa Maria

Animal service officials are investigating at least one possible case of intentional animal poisoning. I received a tip that a veterinarian’s office in Arroyo Grande had recently seen a surge in pet poisoning cases in Santa Maria. That vet apparently reported at least one case to animal services. San Luis Obispo County Officials confirmed they are investigating at least one possible case of intentional pet poisoning. But they are not releasing any more details at this time.”It scares me as a dog owner, that I have to be careful every place I take them. Even in a dog park, where they can run free,” says Carl Deriso. In Santa Barbara County, officials have not received any similar reports, but they say pet owners do need to be aware of the issue. “We get these occasionally. It may be rodent bait thrown over a fence, its always something to be cautious of,” says Pete Miller, with the Santa Barbara County Animal Services.Even if a case of animal poisoning is reported, officials say it is often difficult to determine whether its intentional.”first of all, you have to prove the pet died from poison. Then you have to have a suspect. That’s usually where it ends.Sadly, in some cases, pet owners may unknowingly be the culprit. Officials say there are many common household products that can be deadly to pets.”If its not intended for a pet to consume it you need to be very cautious about whether your pet might get into it accidentally, pick it up on a paw and lick it off, or eat it.”That’s why animal service personnel stress the importance of keeping a close watch on dogs and cats, and to call a veterinarian if they begin to act unusual.IF you believe your pet may have been poisoned, the A.S.P.C.A. has set up a 24 hour tip line. The number is 888-426-4435.
