Santa Barbara High School Theatre brings "The Rocky Horror Show" to the stage

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-A show based on the 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is coming to a local high school stage.

Theatre Director Gioia Marchese said their version entitled "The Rocky Horror Show" isn't as shocking as some might think.

"It is 2023, when you look at it there is no nudity, no sex scene, nothing offensive in it, it is a really celebration of individuality and unique expression, "said Marchese.

Lena Szerwo is one of the many students working behind the scenes.

As both the Marketing Director and the House Manager she believes the cast and crew have captured the essence of the original.

"It is Rocky, it is a joyous expression."

Students play sweethearts Brad and Janet who seek shelter in a castle after getting a flat tire on a stormy night.

Their relationship is testd when they meet Dr. Frank ’N’ Furter and his creation "Rocky", plus a cast of characters who can sing and dance.

Celina Stodder is delighted to play "Columbia."

"I'm so excited thinking about when I'm older and being able to tell people 'Hey, I was Columbia in the Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was in high school,'" said Stodder.

The audience is invited to come dressed in Rocky Horror-inspired outfits to experience the show or to buy items to help them participate in their seats or in the aisles.

There won't be a midnight showing, but there is one showtime at 10 p.m. the final weekend.

Audience members are also eligible to win merchandise if they tag photos of their costumes @sbhstheater.

Students are in their final week of rehearsals.

The Rocky Horror Show opens Friday and runs weekends through April 22nd.

April 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 7:00pm and additional showing on April 21 at 10:00pm)
