Filmmaker honors father Danny Gans in emotional documentary set to premiere at SLO Film Festival

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—A new documentary premiering at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival is transforming personal loss into a powerful story of healing.
“Voices: The Danny Gans Story” follows the life and legacy of Danny Gans—one of Las Vegas’ most celebrated performers—but at its core, the film tells a more personal story: his son’s journey through grief.
Directed by his son, Andrew Gans, the film marks an emotional directorial debut.
“Danny Gans is one of the most famous Las Vegas entertainers of all time—and he’s also my dad,” Andrew says in a one-on-one interview with Your News Channel.
Danny built a career captivating audiences with impressions of stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley, selling out theaters and breaking records along the way.
But behind the spotlight was a father whose life ended too soon.
“I lost my dad and I lost my dream of being a baseball player all within the same month,” Andrew says. “It really sent me on a quest of searching for an identity.”
Years later, Andrew has built a name for himself as a storyteller. And now he’s showing us a side of his dad we’ve never seen through his documentary “Voices: The Danny Gans Story”
Through never-before-seen home videos, archival performances and intimate interviews, Andrew retraces his father’s rise from underdog to superstar—while confronting the pain of losing him.
“Learning about the pressure and the pain that he was in was really difficult for me to hear,” he says. “He tried to protect us from that so much… it must have been very lonely.”
What begins as a biography evolves into something deeper: a story about grief, understanding and the lasting connection between a father and son.
“You see your parents as heroes… but when you realize they’re human and flawed, I felt much closer to him,” Andrew says. “I appreciate his struggles that much more because it didn’t come easy.”
“Voices: The Danny Gans Story” is an official selection of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and will premiere Saturday with three screenings.
