SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Director of French Hospital Medical Center's Hearst Cancer Resource Center, Bev Kirkhart, and her staff are working to support local cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When chemotherapy results in hair loss for local patients, Kirkhart delivers wigs from the resource center’s “Appearance Center.” This not only helps patients feel more confident during their treatment but also eliminates the one more need for these at-risk patients to travel outside of their home.

“Cancer doesn’t stop because there is a pandemic,” says Kirkhart. “Our mission at the Hearst Cancer Resource Center is to care for our patients, and when we hear there is a need, we do what we can to fill it. If I can help someone feel better about themselves, especially now when they are not only dealing with a cancer diagnosis, but the fear of COVID-19, I am happy to do so.”

The Hearst Cancer Resource Center aims to be a resource for San Luis Obispo County families who are living with cancer. The Center works to teach family members about the disease, recognize opportunity for improved health, build a personal support system, and gain a sense of extended family through community connections.

In addition to wigs, the Cancer Center's "Appearance Center" offers head coverings, accessories and skin products that work well for cancer patients who are undergoing treatment and need a confidence boost.
