2026 California Ballot: Proposition 43

KEYT

Proposition 43: Increase the percentage of votes needed to approve voter-proposed local special taxes from majority (over 50%) to two-thirds.

According to CalMatters:

  • This proposition would make it tougher to impose or increase local taxes from a simple majority.
  • Opposers of the proposition argue the measure would limit the ability to raise the needed revenue for local services and projects.
  • Supporters of the proposition claim the measure prevents special interest groups from exploiting low-turnout elections.

FISCAL IMPACT: Possibility that local government tax revenues will not go up as much in the future due to a higher vote threshold for certain taxes.

"Yes" Vote: Beginning January 1, 2027, certain local government taxes on the ballot would require a two-thirds approval by voters.

"No" Vote: Certain local government taxes would continue to be approved by voters with a majority vote.
