Woods Humane Society urgently seeking temporary homes for kittens

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Woods Humane Society is in need of more foster homes to help kittens in San Luis Obispo County.

"We have an urgent need for kitten fosters," said ​​​​​Emily L'Heureux, Woods Humane Society Director of Development Kitten season is here. "We have over 100 kittens currently in our foster system and we are needing more families to open up their homes and hearts."

The kittens are too young or too under-socialized to come to the shelter, said the organization.

"They are not quite old enough to have that life saving essential surgery (spaying or neutering)," said L'Heureux. "In the State of California, you must be spayed or neutered before you can be adopted out.

At both Woods Humane Society locations, in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero, the non-profit will provide all the foster supplies, training, and support to its foster families.

"If we don't have those foster families to bring those kittens home and take care of them, there's a good chance they won't survive," said Woods volunteer Stacey Ritter, who also serves as a kitten foster parent. "Between illness and predators, and just trying to fight for survival out in the world, where they could come and live with a family and become socialized and learn proper cat behavior, get all the love they need, get all the medical attention they need, the proper food and diet plan and raised into happy and healthy kittens."

The call for more foster homes comes during National Foster a Pet Month. It's also the time of the year on the Central Coast when more kittens are being born.

"Summertime here on the coast is always kitten season," said L'Heureux. "Kittens are being born and we usually see through through early fall. We will be just inundated with requests. People have found litters of kittens or a cat came in, a pregnant mama and we need to find homes in order to keep saving lives."
