GROVER BEACH, Calif. – A former police officer in Monterey County who crashed his motorcycle in Grover Beach earlier this year has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Wednesday, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow said 43-year-old Alex Sakhrani of Seaside was charged with felony DUI for a September motorcycle crash in Grover Beach.

On Sunday, Sept. 26, Sakhrani was riding a blue 2014 Harley Davidson when he lost control as he crested the hill north of Oceanview Avenue.

The crash threw both Sakhrani and his passenger, an unnamed woman, into the roadway where they suffered serious injuries.

Sakhrani was previously a police officer with the Seaside Police Department, and was placed on paid administrative following the motorcycle crash. Seaside police confirmed that he had previously been placed on paid leave after being convicted for a hit-and-run earlier in the same month.

A conviction for a felony DUI carries a maximum penalty of three years in state prison, according to the DA's office.
