US Senators introduce immigration reform framework

A team of Republican and Democratic senators unveiled a new plan for immigration reform Monday. It sets a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States. The plan calls for tougher border controls, improved monitoring of visitors, and a crack down on hiring undocumented workers. Once these steps take place, then the undocumented immigrants already in the country begin the process of getting permanent residence.

In a news conference Monday, one of the 8 senators, Chuck Schumer D-New York., said undocumented immigrants would no longer be deported, provided they don’t have a criminal background. The senators did acknowledge that getting the plan through congress is not guaranteed, and the real hurdle is in the Republican controlled house.

President Obama travels to Nevada Tuesday to push his own plan
for comprehensive immigration reform, which he calls a priority in his second term.
