SLO County provides guidelines for churches, barbershops to reopen

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - Barbershops, hair salons and places of worship in San Luis Obispo County can reopen with approval by the County Department of Public Health.

These new guidelines come as Gov. Newsom announced Tuesday afternoon that the state would move forward into Stage 3 of the state's reopening plan.

“We’re pleased to announce that our County Public Health Department has approved modified in-person religious service and hair salon and barbershop services,” said County Public Health officer Dr. Penny Borenstein.

For barbershops and salons, the county is requiring all employees and customers to wear face coverings from beginning to end of all services.

Services such as waxing and facials that can't be performed with face coverings for both the worker and customer should be suspended until those services are allowed to resume, the county said. Nail salons, spas and massages are not allowed to reopen at this time.

Places of worship also have their own set of requirements. Religious services and cultural ceremonies are encouraged to continue to be held online, but churches and other places of worship can begin in-person worship, religious services and funerals as long as they limit capacity to 25 percent or 100 attendees - whichever is lower.

Businesses and places of worship must complete and sign the county's "Ready to Reopen" certification form to be permitted to reopen. Those documents can be found on the county's website.
