2026 California Ballot: Proposition 4

KEYT

Proposition 4: Allows the state of California to establish public campaign funds for public office candidates.

According to CalMatters:

  • Current law prohibits California state and local governments from using public funds to support election campaigns.
  • Supporters of the proposition say passing of this measure would remove the financial barrier and encourage any eligible candidate to run.
  • Opposers of this proposition say passing of this measure would force taxpayers to finance political candidates they do not wish to support.

FISCAL IMPACT: Ongoing costs to the state of a few hundred thousand dollars each year for the Fair Political Practices Commission to answer questions from state and local governments about public campaign finance programs.

"Yes" Vote:  The state would establish public campaigning fund programs for public office candidates.

"No" Vote:  No public campaign funds would be available to public office candidates by the state of California.
