New App Provides Resources To Caregivers of Neurodegenerative Patients on the Central Coast

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) - A new digital platform is getting the attention of local caregivers for patients of neurodegenerative diseases.

A new app provides cutting-edge assistance leading caregivers and their patients “from care to cure.” 

The Peter Cohen Foundation’s recently introduced app EverythingALS facilitates a combination of real-time research, partnerships, and AI-assisted pathfinding for caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

Patients with variations of dementia including Alzheimer’s and especially Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, lose capacity for basic functions and require caregivers.

Those caregivers often become direct family members, whether they have any formal medical training or not.

For those new to caregiving, it can be difficult to know where to start, even though many valuable community resources might be right around the corner.

Local caregivers say partnerships and community resources are vital, yet they often slip under the radar, especially for family members of patients who are new to caregiving.

Bay area researcher and developer Indu Navar had to care for her husband who passed away in 2019 from ALS, and her experience as caregiver combined with her technological knowledge has led to the development of the EverythingALS app.

Having potential to eventually assist with more conditions as research continues, Navar says the app can be thought of as an electrical transformer, synchronizing the differing systems and timeclocks between caregivers, patients, their physicians and pharmacies.

Local caregivers agree with Navar that getting everyone on the same page can be the most vital step to get “from care to cure,” and it can also be the most challenging, particularly for a loved one caring for a patient with no formal training.
