GROVER BEACH, Calif. (KEYT) - Grover Beach will hold a special City Council meeting tonight where the discussion will focus specifically on current housing and development issues.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Grover Beach City Hall and will be a joint session that includes members from both the City Council and Planning Commission.

According to the City Council staff report, Grover Beach leaders are set to "receive information on housing and development issues including State housing law and the City’s response along with key policy considerations and provide input and policy direction to staff regarding potential development code refinements."

The meeting comes at time when Grover Beach is going through a significant housing growth spurt, most notably along West Grand Avenue.

In particular, two multi-story mixed-use housing developments have risen over the past two years at the busy intersection of West Grand Avenue and 4th Street.

Those two projects, along the overall pace of development in the city has drawn some concerns from many in the coastal community.

In a biennial community survey published last year, Grover Beach reported 50% of those who responded felt there is too much development in the city, while 46% answered development is either just right or too little.

In response to the mixed opinions within the community, Grover Beach City Council has scheduled tonight's joint meeting with the Planning Commission.

The staff report said tonight's meeting is an opportunity to better understand the regulatory and policy framework governing housing development, including the limits of local discretion under State housing law.
