Carpinteria teen brings in large stingray off Stearns Wharf
A teenager brought in a large stingray off Stearns Wharf Monday while attempting to catch bait fish.
Vance Keiser saw his pole bending in half and he hung on for 20-30 minutes while he tried to figure out what he had on the other end.
Eventually the fish tired out and came to the surface revealing a stingray.
Keiser said others gathered and were ready to help with circular nets but that was a tricky move over the side.
Eventually it was hauled in and over the rail. He estimated it at 100 pounds.
The hook was removed, pictures were taken and the stingray was released over the side back into the ocean.
Keiser is a student-athlete at Carpinteria High School and last season he was the quarterback of the football team.
Recently he was in Hawaii with his family and caught a large marlin.
