Gauchos stumble in first place chase after series loss to UC Irvine

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a weekend showdown between the Big West's top two baseball squads, UC Santa Barbara lost three out of four games and fell behind conference leader UC Irvine with three weeks remaining in the regular season.

After getting swept in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Gauchos (30-16, 21-11) dropped Sunday's series finale 7-2. They are now four games back of the Anteaters (29-15, 21-7) in the loss column.

Gianni Bloom had two hits and knocked in two runs for UCSB, but the Gauchos could not climb out of an early 4-0 hole. JD Callahan (3-3) took the loss.

The Gauchos begin a three-game home-and-home series against Top-5 team UCLA on Friday, with Saturday's game at home.
