CSUCI seeking surfers for nationwide poll
CAMARILLO, Calif. - Beach closures and the threat of more beach closures by Governor Gavin Newsom is putting many Californians on the brink of COVID chaos.
Surfers especially get bummed out (a severe understatement) when a nice south swell is rolling in and police are chasing people out of the water by police boat and from the beach. We've already seen that happen in Malibu recently.
“The situation is extremely dynamic, with different coastal communities implementing different policies at different times,” said Dan Reineman, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science & Resource Management at Cal State University Channel Islands. “Some beaches are closed now, some ocean access has been blocked, some have reopened already and some are open for locals only. As beach closures are temporary, it is critical for surfers to take the survey now.”
Reinman is conducting a nationwide survey to investigate the social ramifications of beach and ocean access restrictions across the state of California and the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beach closures like the one targeting Orange County by Gov. Newsom on Thursday leaves many people landlocked and frustrated.
“We laud the heroic work of public health officials,” said Reineman. “Under their direction, the curve is flattening. We know these efforts have significance beyond the widely reported economic ramifications. With this survey, we are exploring the effects of coastal closures on surfers.”
Reineman said he wants surfers to take the survey soon because the conditions are fluctuating constantly. He also points out inequities in the policies being implemented.
“For example, you can still surf if you have an oceanfront house,” Reineman said. “Whereas those who rely on public beach access can’t.”
