Santa Maria residents unite for Serve Santa Maria Day

SANTA MARIA, Calif.- On Saturday residents of Santa Maria helped by cleaning up the community.

“We want the kids to be an actual part of their community. And the only way you can really be part of your community is to give back," said Shelly Springer, a Santa Maria High School Teacher.

There were ten different projects spread across Santa Maria.

The projects included Buena Vista Park Clean Up, Color a playground, Litter Pick Up and more.

“A lot of people came out today. I think we had at least 250 people out here doing ten projects across the city of Santa Maria today. We had three houses that we were doing work on for park projects, litter removal, graffiti abatement. And so it's been a fantastic turnout today," said Pastor Carl Nielsen, the Organizer of Serve Santa Maria.

Helpers ranged from all ages from children to adults.

"We do this a couple of times a year, and it's just it's a great community. Event that I mean, we get kids, we get elderly people, and it's just it's it's positive and it helps our city," said Rebecca Carey, with the Recreation and Parks Commission.
