Nipomo man hospitalized after hitting power pole in suspected DUI crash

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A Nipomo man was hospitalized with serious injuries after he crashed into a power pole and then was shocked after stepping on a live electric wire.

On Saturday, June 5 at around 8 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded for a report of a crash on Highway 166 at Bull Canyon Road. When they arrived they found the driver unconscious lying on his back outside of the vehicle.

Officers performed CPR and life-saving measures until paramedics could arrive on scene to take the man to the hospital. His current condition is unclear.

CHP says the 18-year-old driver crashed into a power pole on the westbound side of the highway. He exited the vehicle and stepped on a live electric wire which knocked him unconscious and caused serious injuries.

The driver is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol during the crash.

CHP is continuing to investigate the crash including working to determine how the 18-year-old obtained alcohol.
