SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Halloween will look different this year because of the pandemic, but the Santa Maria Police Department is putting together something kids can still enjoy safely.

SMPD's third annual ‘Trunk or Treat’ event will take place the day before Halloween with some safety measures in place.

In previous years, officers decked out their cars and passed out treats and school supplies to local families.

This year will be a drive-thru event - where families can check out each spooky display and trick-or-treat - from their cars at a distance.

Officers say it’s important to give kids something to look forward to this year.

“They had to deal with cancellations of their schools, not being able to participate in sports, and not be able to go to any events.  so we really wanted to try to have at least something that would be COVID-19 safe, that they can definitely participate in,” said Detective Monique Sandoval.

SMPD plans to release detailed halloween guidelines soon, which will follow state and county health guidelines.
