CUYAMA VALLEY, Calif. -- A big rig rolled over on Highway 166 carrying live chickens on Friday morning.

The rollover happened between Santa Maria and New Cuyama on Highway 166 at around 5:30 a.m.

A big rig was driving eastbound and another big rig was driving westbound on Highway 166 when the semi's made contact in a sharp turn.

The contact made one truck overturn.

Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene along with two San Luis Obispo County fire trucks.

The overturned truck laid on the westbound lane but the incident caused traffic in both directions to be shut down.

Chickens were scattered on the roads causing officials to place a temporary fence on the righthand side of the Highway to hold the chickens.

Traffic didn't start flowing in both directions until 6:22 a.m.
