Alzheimers Association partners with Center Stage in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Tom Hinshaw is getting ready to perform the title role in the play “The Father” at Center Stage in Santa Barbara.

"Touches on the experience of so many families ... having a family member who has some form of dementia," said Hinshaw.

The Alzheimers Association is seeing hundreds of  families across Santa Barbara County suffering from dementia and other cognitive conditions.

"And Alzheimer’s is the third leading cause of death in Ventura County ... in Santa Barbara County ... it is in the top 10," said educator and community manager Jordana Lawrence of the Alzheimer's Association.

When the Central Coast Chapter heard about this gripping play that delves into the complexities of dementia, they collaborate with Center Stage to spread awareness of its services.

“Now the play can be that connection … to help Santa Barbara know that Alzheimer’s is there … that they are not alone," said Lawrence.

The Producing Unit hopes the is play will inspire the community to learn more about dementia. 

“Families, something that many families and many individuals will end up dealing with if they haven’t already," said Hinshaw.

Those attending the play will get a chance to learn about the Alzheimers Association's resources available in the lobby.

"It’s a great story ... to help people kind of work through what maybe they might be going through," said general manager Jim Sirianni of Center Stage.

"I hope is that people will come here with an open mind," said Hinshaw.

"The Father" runs Sept. 19-21 at 7: 30 p.m. at Center Stage in Santa Barbara.
