Santa Barbara Channel designated as the 9th Whale Heritage area in the world
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The World Cetacean Alliance and the World Animal Protection designated the Santa Barbara Channel as the 9th Whale Heritage area in the world, and said this recognition also makes the Santa Barbara Channel only the second Whale Heritage Area in the United States.
The organizations chose the Santa Barbara Channel based on several factors including, the region's timeless cultural connection to Whales, on-going research and the area's dedication to promoting responsible ecotourism.
Cameron Harsh, US director of programs for World Animal Protection said, "Now travelers will be able to discover amazing destinations for responsibly seeing animals in the wild—one of which we are proud to say is right here in the US. The Santa Barbara community is making the protection of wild animals and their homes a clear priority for local tourism, and it is our hope that many other places across the US follow their lead."
As some of the most treasured and loved animals on the planet, this designation will help protect and educate the public on these remarkable animals who call the Central Coast home.
"By appreciating and protecting these magnificent creatures, our hope is we not only enhance their lives but also cultivate our own sense of empathy, wonder, and responsibility towards the planet we share," said Holly Lohuis, the co-director of Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area (SBCWHA)
