Santa Maria man identified as diver whose body found near Gaviota

GAVIOTA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has identified the diver whose body was found near Gaviota early Saturday morning.

Terry Gummerman, 54, of Santa Maria was found dead Saturday morning after he was late returning from lobster diving.

Search and rescue crews responded to his last known location just south of Mariposa Reina.

He had been diving since 3 a.m. Saturday morning but fire officials said he was reported overdue. By around 8 a.m., his body was located within the search area.

The exact circumstances including cause of death have not yet been released.

The Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard all assisted in the search.
