Meet Kyra, Santa Barbara Police Department’s new K9 Officer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Santa Barbara Police Department has a new officer: police dog Kyra.

Officer Kyra finished her officer training on Sunday and is ready to serve the force full-time as narcotics and protection K9 officer. Officer Kyra is a German Shepherd and has been with the force for the last six weeks.

In a statement from the SBPD they wrote about their new K9 officer, "Kyra is a dual-purpose K9. She’s been certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to participate in the apprehension of outstanding suspects and find hidden narcotics."

Officer Kyra is the first female dog to join the SBPD. She will is partnered with officer Lombardo. She is one of two K9 officers on the force, the other is K9 officer Murdoch a Belgian Malinois.
