Fire Teams Battle Battery Fire at Chicago Grade Landfill Outside Atascadero Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Fire crews are on the scene of what appears to be a fire caused by a lithium-ion battery at the Chicago Grade Landfill on Homestead Road east of Atascadero Friday.

According to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, flames are mostly knocked down and teams are using an excavator to dig towards the fire's origin as it continues to smolder and send up smoke.

Landfill employees shared with responders that the fire appears to have been caused and continues due to a lithium-ion battery buried amongst assorted refuse detailed the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

Crews will remain on the scene for several hours for overhaul and a hazardous materials response team is heading to the scene to join fire teams from Atascadero and Templeton shared the local emergency response agency.
