Bicycle safety project results in highway construction and shoulder closures

California Department of Transportation

SAN SIMEON, Calif. – Highway 1 will have shoulder closures near the Vista Del Mar intersection. During construction, bicycles and vehicles will need to share the road.

Construction for the bicycle safety improvement project started this week and will likely last until mid-September, according to Caltrans District 5.

On top of installing bike route signs, the project will widen the shoulders on both northbound and southbound Highway 1 to increase bike safety.

All lanes are expected to stay open except during the removal of the railing towards the end of the project. For more road and traffic updates, stay tuned with ELEPHANT.
