Eye on Crime: Police search for “fishing” suspect

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria police are searching for a man wanted for doing something called "fishing" at a number of local banks.

"Fishing" happens when someone uses a tool with a sticky end, inserts it into a bank's drop box, and retrieves someone else's deposit.

Detectives say the department has heard of these so-called fishing crimes, but have not seen them in Santa Maria recently.

Several banks in the city alerted police because, upon review of surveillance footage, they caught a suspect in the act.

The suspect is seen on these images, attempting to pull envelopes out of drop boxes, and police say, he's already been able to get several items. The total dollar amount stolen is unknown at this point.

If you recognize the suspect or have any information, please call the Santa Maria Police Department.
