SLO and Paso Robles police warn of door-to-door scam
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The San Luis Obispo Police Department is warning the public of a door-to-door scam involving high school aged males.
Police say the San Luis Obispo High School Resource Officer was made aware of a potential scam happening in the city.
Police say a group of teen boys go door-to-door to ask for donations for school-related travel expenses. The teens request cash and checks for the expenses.
The police department has confirmed with the high school that these requests are fraudulent.
The scams didn't stop there, however.
Last week, in Paso Robles, a PRPD officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a car near Paso Robles High School. The driver reportedly fled, ditched the car in the driveway of a random house and attempted to hide behind a trailer in the same driveway.
Police said the 17-year-old suspect was arrested and a manila folder was found in his car that had forged documents inside of it asking for donations for a high school fundraiser.
Paso Robles police said the minor collected donations in San Luis Obispo as well. We do not yet know if there is any connection between this suspect and the juveniles going door-to-door in SLO.
The Paso Robles Police Department and the Paso Robles Joint Unified School district want to remind everyone of the following:
• The PRHS has a no door-to-door donation-only policy
• Any school fundraisers must be approved by the district
• If you ever question the validity of a fundraiser, contact the school or the Police Department.
Residents in SLO County are advised to be extra vigilant and cautious when approached for donations.
If you believe you may have been a victim of these scams, you should contact the San Luis Obispo Police Department at 805-781-7312 or the Paso Robles Police Department.
