Guadalupe Delivers Fated Mayoral Flip as Voters Bridge Budget Gaps

GUADALUPE, Calif. (KEYT) - The midterm elections are projecting a mayoral shift in Guadalupe following several years without change.

Following eight years with mayor Ariston Julian holding office, Tuesday’s midterms are yielding a 40% lead for the current city council member, Christina Hernandez.

As Mayor Pro Tem Christina Hernandez shows a significant lead according to the latest reported ballot counts, current mayor Ariston Julian gives his blessings.

Christina Hernandez has served on the city council since 2022 and challenged incumbent Mayor Ariston Julian in this municipal corner of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The mayoral race is occurring as the city works to manage a $3 million budget shortfall.

Julian has held the mayoral office for four consecutive two-year periods. His background in local government also includes 18 years of intermittent service on the City Council starting in 1980.

The contenders presented contrasting approaches for addressing the city's financial crisis during the campaign cycle.

Julian advocated for rapid spending constraints and strict expenditure controls, prioritizing the protection of public safety positions and municipal employment.

Hernandez’s proposed strategy focuses on a long-range approach, combining immediate financial fixes with acquiring external grants and promoting sustained economic growth.

Mayor Julian says the passing of Measures G and J showcase the groundwork the community has put in place to recover and move forward.
