Ventura man arrested for domestic violence after police standoff on Buena Vista Street Wednesday

VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) – A 73-year-old Ventura man was arrested for domestic battery after barricading himself inside his home on Buena Vista Street Wednesday evening.

On April 22, around 5 p.m., a concerned resident called dispatchers to report a domestic disturbance in the 1400 block of Buena Vista Street stated a press release Thursday from the Ventura Police Department.

Officers arrived to find a woman outside of the reported home with injuries that indicated she had been in a fight and she shared that her husband, later identified as a 73-year-old Ventura man, was armed with a shotgun inside of the home and would shoot anyone who attempted to enter detailed the Ventura Police Department.

The woman was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries added the Ventura Police Department.

Officers established a perimeter and evacuated nearby residents and crisis negotiators attempted to contact the barricaded man explained the Ventura Police Department.

According to Ventura Police, the SWAT team was activated after multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the 73-year-old and, after the "use of various tactical measures", officers were able to take the man into custody.

The 73-year-old declined medical attention and was booked at the Ventura County Jail for domestic battery shared the Ventura Police Department.

"We know incidents like this can be alarming for neighbors," said Commander Todd Hourigan. "Thanks to quick and accurate reporting and a coordinated response, we were able to safely contain the situation and prevent further harm."
