SOLVANG, Calif. - In the wake of recent crashes and other safety issues on Highway 154, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments will hold its first Highway 154 Safety Committee town hall.

The event is set for Monday, December 16 at Solvang Veterans Memorial Building, which is located at 1745 Mission Drive.

County leaders will talk about the latest efforts to boost safety on the busy highway.  The community can also ask questions. Representatives from Caltrans, the CHP, Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, and other local and state elected officials will be there.

Community members have been raising questions about safety on the highway for a while, but the issue was thrust back into the spotlight after a deadly crash that killed a Solvang mother and her two young children on October 25. Investigators say a Santa Barbara man intentionally drove into oncoming traffic near Cold Spring Bridge, causing the crash that killed Vanessa Goss Bley, 34, and her children, who were just two years old and four months old.

There have also been concerns about flooding and debris following the Cave Fire, which burned the hillsides along Highway 154 in November.

The town hall starts with an open house Monday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting begins afterwards at 7 p.m.

Interpretation services will be available for Spanish language speakers.

Santa Ynez YMCA will provide childcare at the Solvang Library.
