Buellton man identified as victim in deadly Hwy 101 crash on Gaviota coast

FATAL 101 CRASH

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Coroner's Office identified the man who was killed in a crash on Highway 101 between Gaviota and Goleta earlier this week.

The coroner's office said Friday that Apollo Owens, 34, of Buellton, died in the crash.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 101 southbound near Arroyo Quemada Bridge.

CHP investigators said a 2006 Ford Escape was driving in the #1 lane when it veered off the roadway and overturned. Owens was the only person in the car. CHP officers say he wasn't wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

The crash backed up traffic for several miles during the morning commute.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
