Hazmat spill slows traffic on Hwy 101 in Carpinteria

KEYT road roadway highway freeway

CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Caltrans crews responded to reports of a hazmat spill in Carpinteria Wednesday morning.

It happened around 5 a.m. at the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Santa Claus Lane.

Caltrans says a semi-truck hit some debris in the highway and somehow severed a gas tank or fuel line, leaking fuel into the roadway.

A SigAlert was issued and the off-ramp was closed while crews cleared the area. Traffic was backed up during the cleanup.

CHP officers say the off-ramp had reopened as of 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.
