Child struck and killed by car near Ramona Elementary in Oxnard

A car struck three people, leaving a child dead Monday morning in Oxnard.

Officers responded to a traffic crash around 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Cooper Road and Anita Avenue, near Ramona Elementary School.

A 2002 Chevrolet van struck a woman and two small children near the intersection of Cooper Road and Anita Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the woman and two children lying near the intersection.

Police say the children were a 9-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy.

They did not release information on the woman, but said all three lived in Oxnard.

The 8-year-old boy went into cardiac arrest and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the woman and girl were seriously injured, but are now in stable condition. Police said they have been able to talk with the girl.

Investigators say the woman is the girl’s mother. The 8-year-old boy was a neighbor’s son who the woman was taking to Cesar Chavez Elementary School.

The driver of the van was a 17-year-old teenager from Ventura who had just dropped off her sister’s kids at Ramona Elementary School, according to police. The 17-year-old was cooperating with the investigation.

They do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, but the driver reportedly told officers that the sun was making it difficult to see.

Police say the 17-year-old did not have her driver’s license.

The coroner’s office worked to notify the family of the 8-year-old boy. He was identified as Alexander Vasquez.

A medical exam is planned for Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing.
