Contract awarded for new Santa Maria elementary school

The Santa Maria-Bonita School District Board has awarded a contract to a Santa Clarita-based firm to oversee construciton of a new elementary school in the Enos Ranch commercial and residential development in Santa Maria.

The project site is on 10 acres of land the district owns along College Drive and Meehan Street.

The campus will have a two-story classroom building, multi-purpose room, enclosed food service area and playground space to accommodate up to 900, K-6 students.

The new school is expected to ease overcrowding within the Santa Maria-Bonita School District which has about 17,000 students.

“Most of our schools are between 850 and 1,000 students at the elementary level and that’s really, really large, very unusual for this area of California to have elementary schools that large”, said SMBSD spokesperson Maggie White, “move some boundaries around, which always has to happen but relieve some of our larger schools and also serve the students who are going to be living in that Enos Ranch project.”

Fundng for the estimated $41 million Enos Ranch school project is expected to come from the local Measure T school bond, Proposition 51, a statewide school construction bond and other sources.

Santa Clarita-based general contractor AMG & Associates, Inc. oversaw construction of the SMBSD’s last new school, Jimenez Elementary, about five years ago.
